Editor’s note: Bivvy Pet Insurance no longer issues new policies. Instead, we encourage our prospective customers to purchase pet insurance coverage through Spot Pet Insurance, one of the best pet insurance companies.

BV’s website doesn’t provide much information, but we spoke to representatives over the phone and confirmed that the company is out of business.

If you have an existing policy, BVV will continue to provide cover until the policy anniversary date. You can find this date on the description page of your policy.

Many advantages and disadvantages of pet insurance

  • It offers a reasonable price
  • All types of family pets are covered
  • A recent test is not required
  • Authorized customers are allowed to make a gift of pet insurance
  • Stopped taking new applications
  • Waiting times were long.
  • It offers lower coverage limits
  • It does not cover pre-existing conditions.
  • It doesn’t work nationally.

Advantages are explained

The price was affordable.

BV Insurance charges $14 to $15 to insure any pet. The company said it will not increase premiums if you file a claim. This makes Bivvy an affordable pet insurance provider.

All types of family pets are covered

BV was one of the few insurance companies that covered other family pets besides dogs and cats. The company offers insurance for frogs, geckos, rats, lizards, snakes, turtles, tortoises, goats, opossums, ferrets, chameleons, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, rabbits, chinchillas, hedgehogs, iguanas, gerbils, pot hogs, and other rodents.

BVV covers most birds, although it does not specify the species that can be insured.

A recent test is not required

BV does not require a recent exam before covering pets. Therefore, even if a pet is prone to disease, prone to certain conditions or at risk of frequent diseases, BV can still be insured.

Authorized customers are allowed to make a gift of pet insurance

BV allows customers to purchase pet insurance coverage as gifts for their family or friends. However, it requires listing the family member or friend as the policyholder and listing the customer as the payee only.

Disadvantages explained.

Stopped taking new applications

According to its official website, BVV is not issuing new pet insurance policies. Instead, the company encourages new applicants to take out pet insurance coverage through Spot Pet Insurance.

Bivvy does not renew existing policies, and coverage for all current policies expires on their anniversary date.

Waiting times were long.

Pet insurance providers set waiting periods (the amount of time it takes for coverage to start after purchasing a policy) to protect themselves from scams from customers trying to insure pets that have already been injured or sick.

For accidents and illnesses, waiting times are generally one to 14 days. Canine orthodontic treatments usually have a longer waiting time, ranging from 14 days to six months.

BV had an above-average 30-day waiting time for infections and a standard 14-day accident waiting time. Canine orthopedics had a longer waiting period of 12 months (in some states).

It offers lower coverage limits

Most pet insurance companies offer coverage limits between $5,000 and $30,000 per year. This is the maximum amount the insurer will pay you for claims made in a 12-month period.

Bivvy had a minimum annual limit of $3,500 and a lifetime limit of $25,000. It had options for compensation rates of 50% and down to $250 per year. While deductibles were standard in the pet insurance industry, reimbursement rates were much lower. Most insurance providers offer payment rates between 70% and 90%.

It does not cover pre-existing conditions.

BV insurance does not cover pre-existing diseases in pets. These refer to health problems that pets (excluding congenital and hereditary conditions) had prior to BV coverage.

Despite this limitation, it was standard practice among most pet insurance providers. BV does not treat conditions that have occurred during the waiting period as prediagnosis unless the pet has shown no symptoms for 12 consecutive months.

It doesn’t work nationally.

BV pet insurance is available in 39 US states and the District of Columbia.

Many pet insurance plans

BV offers two insurance plans: Standard Accident and Sickness Policy and Health Care Supplement.

How we rated BVV pet insurance

We considered the following factors in evaluating Bivvy and its pet insurance plans.

  • Valuing: BV stands out because it charges a flat premium that is affordable for all pets.
  • Available Add-ons: Add-ons allow policy owners to customize their policies to their pet’s needs. The more extras available, the better. In this regard, BV fails.
  • Coverage Limits: A higher coverage limit will help you meet expensive or ongoing medical expenses. BV margins were significantly below the market average.
  • Eligible pets: Most pet insurance companies only cover dogs and cats. BV was different because it offered policies for all family pets.
  • Pre-existing conditions: Pet insurance for pre-existing conditions can help you get medical care for a pet that is already sick. Like other pet insurance providers, Bivvy does not cover pre-existing conditions.
  • National Availability: BV is not available in every state, making it inaccessible to some pet owners.
  • Customer Support: Bivvy provides a phone number, email and postal address.

Summary of Money’s Bivvy pet insurance

For some pet parents, pet insurance can be worth it. Financial assistance can be provided when your pet becomes ill or injured, eliminating unexpected pet expenses and emotional stress. However, premiums can be higher, especially when pets are older.

While Bivvy Pet Insurance is no longer issuing new policies, it stands out by offering a flat rate that is affordable regardless of pet’s age, type or size. Unlike many providers, BV covered a variety of family pets beyond cats and dogs.

However, BV had limitations such as low coverage limits, long waiting periods, and exclusion of pre-existing conditions. (And of course, it went out of business.)
