Australians are spending $2.9 billion each year on veterinary checks for pets, new research has revealed.
Aussie pet owners spend an average of $609 a year, up from $597 last year, according to the Finder survey of 627 people.
The majority of pet owners (70 percent) have taken their pet to the vet at least once in the past 12 months, half (53 percent) made one or two visits, and one in five (17 percent) made three or more visits.
Finder’s insurance expert Gary Hunter says the cost of pet ownership can add up quickly.
“From food, to vet checks and care, there are many costs that come with having a furry friend,” Hunter said.
If you’re looking for peace of mind for any unexpected bills or regular vet visits, Hunter says pet insurance is worth considering.
“It’s important to weigh the pros and cons and decide if pet insurance is right for you and your pet,” Hunter said.
Dog pet insurance will cost you an average of $1,524, while cat pet insurance is much cheaper at an average of $909.
Depending on your policy, pet insurance may cover certain pet bills as well as accidental injuries and illnesses.
Finder understands there’s a $1,000 difference between the cheapest and most expensive policies, so shopping around for savings can be worthwhile.
