Local municipalities in Utah often have their own regulations regarding pets. Here is a sample of pet laws in Utah cities.

Salt Lake City Pet Laws

Salt Lake City does not limit how many cats or dogs you can own as long as your pet is properly cared for. All dogs and cats are required to be licensed annually by a person 18 years of age or older. You are required to license your dog or cat within 30 days of owning it or within 30 days after they are 4 months old. If you are fostering a dog or cat and awaiting adoption, the time to license your pet will increase to 90 days.

You must attach a permission tag to your dog or cat’s collar or harness when your pet is off your property. If your pet has a microchip and you register the microchip information with the Animal Services office, your pet is exempt from being required to wear an authorization tag.

Dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies within 30 days of 4 months of age or after moving to an urban area. You should keep your dog or cat up to date on their rabies vaccinations.

If a person or animal is bitten by a species that commonly carries rabies (such as a bat or raccoon), you should immediately report the incident to the Animal Services Office or the Salt Lake Valley Health Department. If you own a pet that bites you, or if you are bitten by an animal, you must report the bite within 24 hours, even if the animal that bit you is an animal that normally carries rabies.

Any pet with suspected rabies must be reported and the owner is required to keep the animal in an enclosed area. You must surrender the animal to the Office of Animal Services when requested for quarantine and monitoring.

West Valley City Pet Laws

You may not have more than two dogs and two cats in one household.

You are required to issue an annual license for dogs and cats 4 months of age or older. Listed owners must be 18 or older. To obtain a permit, you must provide a copy of your pet’s most recent rabies vaccination certificate. If your pet has been spayed or neutered, you will need to provide a copy of the sterilization certificate.

West Jordan pet laws

You can have up to four adult dogs and up to four adult cats in your household.

You must issue an annual license for dogs and cats 18 or older who are 4 months of age or older. If you get a new dog or cat, they must get a license within 30 days of getting it or 30 days after the dog or cat turns 4 months old. You must renew your license on or before January 1st. Disability service dogs are exempt from licensing fees.

You must attach the license tag to the collar or harness of your dogs and cats. If you remove the tag from your dog and are found to be in violation of this law within three or more 12 month periods, an animal control officer may seek to revoke your dog license and impound your dog.

If your pet bites or attacks a person or other animal two or more times within a 12-month period, your pet may be impounded by the Animal Control Department without a court order and held at your expense pending a court hearing.
